A FATEFUL MEETING
On one of her many excursions to Germany, Owner Carol Ettwein and a friend were enjoying a relaxing lunch in the Café Lile in Triberg, admiring the many beautiful murals that adorned the walls of the café. Struck by the artistry, the two of them openly admired the quality of each piece. Overhearing their conversation, a gentleman inquired, "So, you like my paintings?"
Unbeknownst to them, their fellow patron and the creator of those beautiful murals was Werner Oppelt, a well-known German artist and the curator of the Triberg Museum for more than a decade. The trio struck up a conversation and over coffee and struedel a friendship was born.
Taking his first trip to America, Herr Oppelt traveled to Asheville and spent two weeks with the Ettwein family and his new friends, creating the beautiful murals that adorn the Black Forest Restaurant.
We invite you to tour the restaurant to see each of these special works of art, each one an original and spontaneous creation of the artist. We are delighted that Herr Oppelt has chosen to share his unique artistict interpretation of the scenic beauty of rural Germany with us, helping to accentuate the Black Forest's authentic Old World ambiance.

This mural is a special tribute to the
Italian branch of the Ettwein family
